The above quote (click for source) seems to be a bit odd. They know people are getting last years pet, but they don't know if it's on purpose or not. I guess it's nice for the people that didn't get last years pet, but I am betting this is just a simple error and Deathy will not have a new home with this years ticket holders for much longer.

What do you guys think? Should Blizzard let people keep the pet if this is a mistake?
The mount was a Celestial Steed which is 25$ and the non-combat pet, Lil' XT which is 10$. Both of which can be viewed here. Both of these things are quite awesome, and if as many people bought them on your sever as they did on mine, then Blizzard made an absolute killing profit wise.

But with this I will bring up the question of where will be go from here? Personally I have a hard time forking over 25$ for an in game item after I am paying 15$ a month already, and have other in game mounts that do the same thing. More items will surely arrive, but what if Blizzard introduced a new whole bunch of pets or mounts and lowered the monthly subscription? If I was able to put my 15$ a month toward buying an in game pet or mount, I would have no problem purchasing quite a few. A mini Ragnaros possibly? Yes please, sign me up! It will be interesting to see where this will go, especially with this sale being so successful and with more and more MMO's coming out Blizzard could find new ways to keep people playing WoW.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6808773294178924662.post-34797594409042375702010-04-22T19:47:00.000-07:002010-04-22T19:54:10.991-07:00Rogue/Mage Pew Pew Pew

Over the next few days I will be making a video review of the upcoming Mage and Rogue changes rolling out with the Cataclysm expansion. So please look forward to that!

Today I wanted to address a different issue. Ten characters per server is a good amount and I understand why they don't want to raise that number, but I am finding that a side of effect of all this Cataclysm news is Altoholicism. I really can't stop playing alts, and I really want to have one of every class before Cataclysm comes out. Why, you ask? So I don't miss out on what each class is currently like! I have been playing since launch and I have leveled every class to at least 20, most of them to level 30 or higher. Over the past five years that experience has changed, but not like it will Cataclysm.

I started leveling a Warrior, Mage, and a Rogue. That's on top of my Druid, Deathknight, and Paladin, that are all pretty high levels already. After I got my Rogue to level 26 the other day, I thought about playing my Mage for a bit, and it dawned on me. I have almost no room for any new characters at Cataclysm launch. Sure, I could play them on a different server, but my guild and in-game friends are all on Earthen Ring. It would suck to level on a different server with out them.

I feel like I only have two options: to stop leveling or to level them all the way with the knowledge that I will be deleting them when Cataclysm comes out so I can level them the new way.

Sure, I could buy another account, but that's just more money than I want to spend.

Any suggestions?

As you have probably heard by now, information was released last week about the changes that are being made to the Warlock class in the Cataclysm expansion! There are a lot of "cataclysmic" changes for Warlocks that will ultimately revolutionize the way that we play this class. Let's dive right in.

New Warlock Spells

Fel Flame (level 81): Quick-hitting spell dealing Shadowfire damage. This is similar to the mage ability Frostfire Bolt, in that the lower of the two resistances (in this case shadow and fire) on your target will be used for calculating its damage. Additionally, Fel Flame refreshes the duration of Immolate and Unstable Affliction. Our goal for Fel Flame is to provide a spell that's good for mobility and for use by Destruction and Demonology specs. Also, did we mention it uses green fire? Yep. Instant cast.

I think this is going to be very helpful to Warlocks in any situation -- PvP or PvE because it gives them an instant cast that they can use while they are moving to continue DPS. Many of us casters lose DPS every time we have to move to get out of the gook or what have you, and it will be awesome to be able to keep up our DPS while we are dodging whatever is being thrown our way. Plus, who wouldn't love green fire??

Dark Intent (level 83): Increases the target's chance for a critical effect with periodic damage or healing spells by 3%. When the target lands a crit, you get a buff to your damage for 10 seconds. This effect stacks up to three times.

This seems like it will be great for groups/raids. I like the idea of playing off another player's damage and crits, contributing to each other's DPS rather than competing on the DPS meter.

Demon Soul (level 85): Fuses the warlock's soul with his or her demon. This provides warlocks with a self-burst cooldown to use. The specific effects granted by Demon Soul depend on the demon chosen. Demon Soul lasts for a certain number of charges or until it expires (around 20 seconds), depending on the demon used. 2-minute cooldown.

This reminds me of the old Demonic Sacrifice talent that gave your Warlock a buff when you sacrificed your demon. I am interested to learn what the specific buffs are for the different demons.

Soul Shard Overhaul

This major change regarding Soul Shards was previously announced at BlizzCon 2009. Soul Shards will no longer be inventory items, but instead a new UI resource mechanic. Warlocks will have 3 Soul Shards that can be used during a fight and will not be able to gain additional shards during combat. Soul Shards will not be required outside of combat. Soul Burn will consume a Soul Shard resource, thereby allowing you to use the secondary effects of some spells. Soul Burn has no mana or health costs and is off the global cooldown. Planned secondary effects are outlined here.

Summon Demon + Soul Burn = summon the demon instantly.

Drain Life + Soul Burn = Reduces cast speed by 60%.

Demonic Circle + Soul Burn = Increases movement speed by 50% for 8 seconds after teleporting.

Unstable Affliction + Soul Burn = Instantly deals damage equal to 30% of its effect.

Soul Fire + Soul Burn = Instant cast.

Healthstone + Soul Burn = Increases total health by 20% for 8 seconds.

Searing Pain + Soul Burn = Increases the crit chance of Searing Pain by 100%, and subsequent Searing Pain spells by 50% for 6 seconds.

Here's the one we've all been waiting for. Finally, a solution to all those annoying shards that we carry around, taking up bag space!! This is something that's needed a makeover for a long time, and it will be so refreshing to play in Cataclysm. What I didn't expect is that they would do something more interesting with the shards than just make them stackable! I love the idea of the secondary effects, and I think this will force players to become more skilled about timing their spells and making more strategic actions. There are some concerns about the use of shards in varying combat lengths. There has been an updated response to those concerns:

On regenerating shards in combat, we will add a mechanic to regen shards if we find that we need to in order to handle variable combat length. We haven’t added one yet because we really want to emphasize locks using shards at the right time and not as fast as they can with then an Evocation-like spell to bring them back again. These are supposed to be special moments in a fight -- think Bloodlust perhaps -- and not used every 20 seconds on cooldown (or whatever the cooldown ends up being).

[Source]

Next you will find a list of some of the warlock spell and talent changes for the release of Cataclysm. There will be further changes, but those revealed below should offer some insight into our goals.

[Source]

Changes to Abilities and Mechanics

All warlock damage-over-time (DoT) spells will benefit from crit and haste innately. Haste will no longer act to reduce the DoT's duration, but rather to add additional ticks. When reapplying a DoT, you can no longer "clip" the final tick. Instead, this will just add duration to the spell, similar to how Everlasting Affliction currently works.

Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom will be converted into Bane of Agony and Bane of Doom. Bane spells are considered magic instead of curses. This means you will be able to cast one Bane (e.g. Bane of Agony) and one Curse (e.g. Curse of Elements) on a single target.

Hellfire will no longer deal damage to the warlock.

Imps will lose Fire Shield, but will gain a new ability, Burning Ember, which is a stacking DoT.

The succubus melee range will be increased. The succubus will no longer have Soothing Kiss, but will instead have Whiplash, which knocks back all enemies within 8 yards.

Voidwalker Torment will do increased damage and generate a lot of area-of-effect (AoE) threat. Suffering will become a single-target taunt.

[Source]

I'm very curious to see how the new DoT mechanism plays out. It seems like it could actually make game-play a little boring for us. What's to stop us from throwing up a DoT at the beginning of a fight, increasing its duration by throwing it up several more times, and then sitting back and tossing shadow bolts for the rest of the fight? I'm not so confident that this is going to work well, but I trust that Blizzard will work it out. The Bane spells are awesome since we will get some added damage by being able to use one Bane and one Curse at a time.

And Hellfire? We won't be able to commit suicide anymore?? ...But seriously, it has been said that Hellfire is going to be the specialty for Warlocks in the Demonology tree, whereas Affliction Warlocks have Seed of Corruption and Destruction Warlocks have Rain of Fire. Not sure about this one.

The Demon changes are cool as well, and pretty much just make them more effective in their individual roles. I love using the Voidwalker for solo questing, and this will make it all the more enjoyable. I would love to see a reason for the Succubus to become more advantageous to use in distinct situations, but I don't see Whiplash as giving us a good enough reason to use a Succubus over another Demon.

New Talents and Talent Changes

Pandemic will now cause Drain Soul to refresh Unstable Affliction and Bane of Agony on targets below 25% health.

The ability Fel Domination will be removed (because Soul Burn accomplishes the same effect).

Demonology will gain a new direct-damage spell, Demon Bolt. Demon Bolt will add a debuff that improves the damage done by the demon to the target.

We plan to add a new talent, Impending Doom, which will give certain spells a chance to reduce the cooldown on Metamorphosis and Curse of Doom.

Metamorphosis will no longer be subject to demonic crowd control. Furthermore, abilities available only while under the effects of Metamorphosis will be altered to put more emphasis on the warlock's own spells.

Shadowburn will now do additional damage to targets below 25% health.

[Source]

All welcomed improvements to say the least. Demon Bolt should be helpful in bringing the Demon in as a more significant part of the damage rather than basically being little more than an added buff. The Impending Doom, Metamorphosis, and Shadowburn changes sounds interesting, but I'd need to see some more details about them before I form an opinion.

Mastery Passive Talent Tree Bonuses

Affliction

Spell Damage

Spell Crit

Shadow DoTs: The damage caused by Shadow damage-over-time spells is increased.

Demon Damage: The damage caused by pets and Metamorphosis is increased.

Fire Direct Damage: The damage caused by Fire direct damage spells is increased.

[Source]

These really seem to be suited for individual trees, and again, I am anxious to see more details about how this will play out. Sometimes it really is difficult to know until you see these things in action. That just about covers everything that has been released thus far, but I want to make sure the include the additional comments and updates that you may not have seen. Apparently, there were some concerns with the fact that Blizzard has not included anything about a new Demon.

Demon lovers, we haven’t ruled out adding a new demon, but we want to be very careful here. We’ve had a hard enough time finding niches for some of the current ones. So we first want to make sure existing demons are cool before we’re faced with Q&A several months from now asking why the new demon either isn’t cool enough, or why warlocks no longer use, say, their felhunter because of the new demon.

[Source]

We did mean to cover doomguards and infernals, but they didn't make it into our preview. Our plan is that you can summon a doomguard or infernal as a cooldown-based pet, much like the shaman elementals, without having to give up your current, permanent demon. If we add a new demon it will likely be one of these cooldown-based ones, and not a permanent pet like the imp, voidwalker, succubus, felguard or felhunter. We’re just not convinced there is a niche for a new permanent demon (and perhaps not even a temporary one).

Flying mounts and female Metamorphosis forms are great ideas and something we’ve had on the wish list for a long time. We can only create so many new creatures during a single expansion, and getting one of these might mean fewer new creatures in outdoor worlds or dungeons. It’s just a trade-off and sometimes you have to make hard calls. We’ll keep them on the list though.

[Source]

We do like the idea of allowing warlocks to re-skin their demons and have been talking about possible ways to implement this. I have no concrete information for you at this time beyond that.

When it comes to naming demons, this has always been one of those sacred cows, where the hunter gets to name their pet because he loves his pet bear, but the warlock considers the demon to be something disposable -- a tool.

The Demon Bolt debuff will only affect the warlock's demon, not other demons. We wanted a Demo-themed nuke that made it feel like the pet was part of the damage.

For Soul Shard bags, we will probably do something like remove all the shards, reduce the bag size (a little) and convert it to a normal bag. This would be a one-time conversion. We'll probably get rid of the recipes, as we wouldn't want other classes to go out and get shard bags just to get a free bag.

[Source]

So until we get any more information from Blizzard, we will have to do our best to digest this and excitedly anticipate the release of Cataclysm. It sounds like we can't get our hopes up too much about Warlock flying mounts or female Meta forms, but wouldn't it be epic if that were something we could count on being given in the future?!

I can't wait to see how all of this goes in the Alpha and Beta testing, and we will be sure to do our best to keep you updated as the information rolls out. Signing off.

I will be highlighting the changes that will be coming for priests, which can be viewed from the main Blizzard post here.

First off there is way too much stuff to fully break down in one short post, so I will try and keep it short and simple. My priest has always been my main. From vanilla WoW through currently in ICC, I have also played every spec, so I know the effect these changes will have first hand.

New Spells - I am going to avoid what these actual spells do, because I would just be copying and pasting from Blizzard. However I will be focusing on how this will affect the current game play as a priest.

Heal - Since this spell will scale up to 85, priests not have three cast-able heals. Flash Heal, Heal, and Greater Heal. This will fill that small gap where Greater Heal is too powerful and will waste mana, but you would need two Flash Heals to top off the target, which also will be a waste of mana. It is a nice addition, but I really cannot know how useful it will be.

Inner Will - It may be useful for PvP. The ability to move quicker and use instant casts quicker will be very nice. For those PvPers out there, with this you may be able to out run people trying to kill you and be able to use your instant casts continuously. From a PvE view, this will be pretty useless.

Mind Spike - The goal of this spell is to close the gap in shadow dps ramp up time. Currently if a shadow priest switches to an add they take a bit of time until they can do decent damage. An example of this would be the blood beasts on Deathbringer Saurfang, where by the time a priest casts Shadow Word: Pain then Mind Flay, the target is dead. This spell will serve as a quick damage on the target so you do not need to spend a lot of ramp up time. It will be awesome for fights like DBS and Lord Marrowgar where quick burst dps is needed on an add.

Leap of Faith - Currently in the game I do not see any reason for this spell. PvP wise this may be nice to pull people away if they are about to die to allow more time for them to be healed. PvE, I really can’’t see a use. It may be useful to pull people out of a void zone, but it shouldn't be the priests job to babysit the bad players in a raid. Maybe to pull the melee dps from one target to another for less down time, in something like Blood Prince fight?

Overall, nothing here really excites me. Mind Spike makes shadow better suited for both PvE and PvP, but other then that no new spell will drastically change the current priest play style.

Talent / Spec Changes - With these there was quite a bit of big information. So I will hit on the major things for each spec.

Discipline - There were two big things revolving shields. First is Power Word: Barrier finally! This will be the aoe shield we have always wanted. Secondly is the talk of a larger shield. This would be very nice because we could toss he larger shield on the tank taking the big hits, then save the smaller Power Word: Shields for anyone in the group.

Holy - They said they were wanted to make Holy a better well rounded spec, which is great. So they are going to try and go about this by putting us into a different healing state based on what we cast. Here is an example: We cast three Greater Heals in a row on our main tank, we then enter a "Tank Healing" state so our Greater Heals will get better but our aoe heals will become weaker. The same for the other way, if we cast three Prayer of Healing or Circle of Healing in a row, we enter an aoe heal state. In which our aoe heals become better but our tank heals become weaker. This will be great for holy priests because they can once again be at the top of all healers. We will be able to go into a raid and heal the tank a few fights, then aoe heal a few fights. Currently tank healers are Discipline and aoe healing priests are Holy, this should change things up.

Shadow - The big thing is the introduction of Shadow Orbs apart of the new Mastery system. Basically you have a chance to generate an orb while doing damage, and then you will be able to consume an orb for a special effect, such as an increase in damage or an instant cast. There is a lot they can do with this so we will just have to see where it goes, should be quite neat. Another thing noted is they want to make Shadow Word: Death something like Execute, so the damage is increased when the target is below 25%. Will be interesting to see if they lower the cool down if they do this.

Note: All of these things can (and a good chance they will) change. Cataclysm is still quite a ways off and through both Alpha and Beta testing we will sure see a change in a lot of these things.
Over the next week we will be covering all the changes in more detail, but for now I would like to address a few changes that seem to be the same for most classes. For example, almost every Heal over Time (HoT) or Damage over Time (DoT) will now be effected by Haste through the addition of ticks rather than just ticking faster. This is a huge change for almost every class.

Currently Haste can affect some DoTs so they just run their course of damage faster, making Shadow Ward: Pain, for example, do the same amount of damage in less time. In Cataclysm, Shadow Ward: Pain will stay up for it's normal duration, 18 seconds in this case, but do more damage because your Haste has added more ticks in the 18 seconds it's up.

This change is, in my mind, the perfect use of Haste for casters' HoTs and DoTs because it's simple and it's a good way to control how much damage is being output. Under the Warlock changes, Blizzard says something very interesting, "When reapplying a DoT, you can no longer "clip" the final tick. Instead, this will just add duration to the spell, similar to how Everlasting Affliction currently works."If this change will affect all Hot's and Dot's, the play style of many players will have to change. You will no longer have people spamming keys to get the HoT or DoT back up. What you will have is a much more relaxed single pressing of a key to add time to the spell.
No, I don't mean more time to play, but more gold to spend on uber sweet gear! In my search for knowledge I stumbled upon a post by a guy named Generikb in the official forums that changed my life...er...my virtual life. In the post he gave step by step instructions on how to always keep the coins flowing your way.

I never give anyone money in WoW, but I do dispense this advice freely. I truly believe the age old saying, "Give a man a fish and he'll not be hungry for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll not be hungry for a lifetime." Consider yourself being taught fishing and you will never be without...gold. Here is what I have learned.

1) Get two "gathering" professions (i.e. herbalism, mining or skinning). Try to get skinning with herbalism or mining so that you are not having to constantly swap between mini-map functions to search for minerals or herbs. This point will take some explanation.

As an example: If you were to get skinning with leatherworking your profitability gets crippled. Here is why: Any potential profit that selling the skins would have generated is consumed by creating crafted items with leatherworking which are necessary to level your leatherworking skill points. If you have two gathering skills then you are purely gathering for profit. You are basically acting as a supplier to other crafters that need your ore, herbs, or skins to level their tradeskills.

Don't worry, you can get a "creation" craft soon...keep reading.

2) Invest in bags. Get the biggest bags you can afford. This is a top priority so that you can pick up and sell everything you loot or farm.

3) Pick up everything! Don't leave anything unlooted. Yes, even if it is a gray or white item, pick it up!! Don't be a loot snob.

4) Never sell an item to a vendor unless it is a gray item. EVERY white item in the game can be used in one way or another. Do the research and find out what it is worth. You never know, that white item could be a highly sought after mat for a high end pattern or recipe!

5) Auction House, Auction House, Auction House! Use the Auction House to sell EVERYTHING white, green, blue, purple, etc... Take the time to look up current market prices. If you have a stack of a specific herb, search for it before you list yours and price your stack competitively. Money in your pocket is ALWAYS easier to spend than "potential/hypothetical" money of an item listed on the Auction House.

6) When you reach level 80 (soon to be level 85) drop one of your gathering skills and use your uber-wealth to powerlevel a creation skill. Powerleveling is defined as leveling a skill by purchasing/gathering the necessary mats in a quick manner. The tables have turned and you are now going to rely on others to supply your mats. Consider powerleveling a tradeskill that complements the gathering profession you have decided to keep. For example, if you chose to keep herbalism, powerlevel alchemy.

You can choose to drop one of your gathering professions sooner if you like, but for me I like to keep two gathering skills until I max out my character level. Explore the options and there is no end to how much gold you can make in World of Warcraft!

I started my first horde character back in November and followed the above suggestions. I am now level 68 and have over 3,500 gold on that toon. That is with NO character transfer to bring money over and making my primary focus leveling. All I have done is pick up everything I can and selling it on the Auction House. That's it. Simple and rewarding.

Now go pick some flowers!!
So after spending the last few days never letting it leave my side, every day I continue to find new things to do on it. With all this time spent it just got me thinking of how amazing this could be to use with WoW. For the people who remember, about a month or two ago Blizzard announced that they were going to be bringing WoW Auction House support to their mobile platforms. (For those who missed it, the post is here)Sure it would be nice to do your daily Auction House work on an iPhone, but the interface would be a bit small. But the iPad would be the perfect platform to be able to do this.

Let me explain why:

The larger screen would allow to show your full inventory on the screen at the same time. On an iPhone we would be forced to scroll through your items.

It would be just a quick tap on the item, list your price, then post. Blizzard would not need to recreate a full new version of the current Auction House, they would be able to keep the "Search" and "Post" tabs the same, so it would be easy to pick up and use for anyone.

Now here are some benefits (or disadvantages, it depends how you currently use the Auction House)

Posting items will allow you to post on the go. An example of this would be for people who work say from 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday. Currently these people are able to post before they go to work, but once they are undercutted they are out of luck. Being able to repost while on the go will allow them to compete at all times during the day.

Auction House trends will be noticeable to more people. Right now I know all the times in which certain markets are low and when they are high. However some people may not have access to WoW while they are out and are missing out on these incredible deals.

The potential bad is people who do not have access to a mobile Auction House will get killed. 1/3rd of the population uses a smart phone, even less will have an iPad and play WoW. The mobile Auction House would really favor those who had access to these devices and I am not sure if Blizzard is ready to do that.

What do you all think? Could this really be something that ends up to be great? Or am I just looking for an excuse to use my iPad for more things (I say this as I am typing this post in Pages on my iPad...)
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6808773294178924662.post-24964201574907070152010-04-05T13:00:00.000-07:002010-04-05T13:00:41.597-07:00Rage Changes for Cataclysm

Bornakk has announced some up coming changes to Rage on the World of Warcraft forums. The details of all the Warrior and Druid changes have yet to be announced so we really don't have the full context of all the upcoming changes. Apparently Blizzard thinks there are some problems with Warriors and Druids dealing with their Rage including:

Warriors/druids in the lowest levels of gear can be Rage-starved.

Warriors/druids in the highest levels of gear no longer have to manage their Rage when it becomes infinite.

Warrior/druid tanks lose Rage income as they improve their gear and take less damage.

The gameplay of warrior and druid tanks loses a lot of depth when massive boss hits means never having to manage Rage.

Heroic Strike and Maul are effective, but tedious abilities for using up extra Rage.

In general, warriors and druids don’t have enough control over their Rage.

In order to fix these issues Blizzard is going to make these changes:

1)Rage is no longer generated based on damage done by auto-attacks. Instead, each auto-attack provides a set amount of Rage, and off-hand weapons will generate 50% of the Rage main hands do. This amount is based on a constant formula which factors in the base swing speed of the weapon. This means the Rage gained should be averaged out between fast and slow weapons. The constant formula also gives us the ability to easily increase the rage gained if it feels too low (or reduce it if [it] is too high). We are also implementing the following mechanics, which will still allow rage to improve to some extent as you improve gear:

If the attack is a critical strike, it will generate 200% Rage.

Haste will accelerate swing times to generate Rage faster.

2) Rage from damage taken will no longer be based on a standard creature of the character’s level, but instead will based on the health of the warrior or druid. Again, there is a constant that is multiplied by the rage generated in order to allow for fine-tuning. This calculation ignores all damage reduction from armor, absorption, avoidance, block, or similar mechanics, so improving your gear will not reduce Rage gained.

3) We will provide warriors and druids with more instant sources of rage. For example, the warrior shouts are changing to work more like the death knight ability Horn of Winter. Instead of Battle Shout consuming Rage, it will generate Rage but have a short cooldown. Both classes will have additional methods to generate Rage in an emergency or bleed off Rage when they have too much.

4) All “on next swing” attacks in Cataclysm are being removed. Heroic Strike and Maul will be instant swings that cost a variable amount of Rage. For example, imagine Heroic Strike costs between 10 and 30 Rage. You must have at least 10 Rage to use the attack, but it will consume all available Rage up to a maximum of 30. Any Rage consumed above the minimum will cause the ability to hit harder, and in some cases much harder. We will tune the ability so that it’s generally not a good idea to hit it when you have low Rage (unless everything else is somehow on cooldown) but becomes a more attractive button the higher your Rage.
All these changes seem to be in good order, and I am most excited about the removal of "on next swing" attacks. As a Druid, Maul always felt a bit lame. This kind of mechanic separates the player from the toon by making the player feel like he is just giving commands to his character rather than playing the character directly. I welcome all these changes and hope it brings some life to Warriors and bears in the up coming expansion.

Every quest and zone brought a new experience. At one point, I can recall starting a Night Elf character. I began leveling in the starting zone, and for some of the quests, I had to go into Shadowthread Cave where there where creeping spider creatures all throughout. I remember being totally freaked out by the spiders in the zone, and panicking every time I had to fight one. Looking back, it seems extremely ridiculous and laughable, but at the time it was such a new and real experience!

A while back, I came across a rather interesting article by Qiaolei Jiang of Peking University in China. Jiang researched the factors of games that keep gamers coming back for more. He outlined four stages that create a sort of lifecycle for gamers within a specifice game.

Gamers' lifecycle can affect gamers' feelings and behavior. In the different stages of a gamers' lifecycle, gamers pay attention to different characteristics of the game. They care more about features and entertainment in the early stages, but in the late stages focus more on socialization and relationships, which are also the main reasons why the stay or return after leaving.

The four stages discussed are Confusion, Excitement, Involvement, and Boredom. When I first started playing WoW, I was lost as can be. It took awhile for me to figure out the game mechanics -- learn how to fight beasts, complete quests, talk to NPCs, etc, which is why those spiders were probably so scary! We all went through the stage of Confusion, and I'm guessing that if you're reading this, you got to the second stage as well!

The Excitement stage is pretty self-explanatory. This is the part where we started really getting into the game, leveling up, joining guilds, engaging in chat, and exploring the "World" of Warcraft. This stage, undoubtedly leads to the third stage of the lifecycle: Involvement. Now we're in and attached. This is said to be the longest period, marked mainly by social events within the game.

The last stage is Boredom, and it's a stage that most of us may have experienced mildly at some point. "No matter how interesting a game is, after involvement, when there's nothing new or exciting, the gamers will leave." I think Blizzard has done an amazing job of never allowing us to stay bored for very long. Between frequent patches, two expansions and a third on the way, the supply of things to keep us busy in-game seems infinite! I can also say, for WoW in particular, that the game content has morphed tremendously from "Vanilla WoW" to the current state of gameplay. Personally, I have not reached the point of boredom in a long time.

I have been playing WoW since launch, and despite all of the new content from Blizzard, I can honestly say that the most memorable experiences that I've had in-game have come directly from relationships and social events. When I look back over all the years that I have been playing, the memories that stand out the most are those of people that I have met while playing. Yes, the rest of the game is fun and exciting. I love taking down bosses, gearing up, and pwning noobs in PvP. But I don't think any of that would have been as exhilarating and enjoyable without the people that accompanied me in all of those experiences.

That is precisely what I think keeps me coming back for more. That gets me. I took a break from WoW for an entire year, and the reason that I came back was because of the people!

Am I all alone in feeling that this is true? Or can we all agree that when it all boils down, it's the social aspects of the game that keep you coming back for more? What really gets you about the World of Warcraft?

So I am like most of you. I have that email account that I never check. You know, the one that you use to register your printer, setup logins on random websites, and basically just let it fill up with useless spam. Well, when I first started playing WoW I used that account to register with Blizz. However, since the merge with the BattleNet system I have switched the email account my WoW info is associated with.

The other day I was reminded that I hadn't checked my "junk account" in quite some time. To my surprise there were several emails from Blizzard about my account being hacked, compromised, and illegally sold. The emails said that if I didn't respond quickly that they would be forced to suspend my account for 3 hours to start or ban it altogether. My heart started racing and then I realized...wait a minute...this isn't the email address that Blizz has on file! Then I looked closer. It was impressive to behold. Whoever had sent this email had linked a dozen or so legitimate pages from the WoW website to try and throw me off the scam. They even listed the customer service numbers to Blizzard if I had any questions.

That was a close call! I am sure that if I had followed the links they provided to "resolve" the issues they purported as authentic that I would have either been asked for my password or worse yet, downloaded a keylogger of some sort to steal my login info.

If you don't have an authenticator attached to your account, GET ONE! This doesn't guarantee that no one will hack into your account, but it at least adds a layer of protection. In recent weeks I have heard about a method that hackers are using called, "the man in the middle". First they use a keylogger to get your password and then once you type in your authenticator code they try and quickly login to your account with your password and code and lock you out of your account.

Once I heard about this technique I changed how I log into WoW. On the mobile authenticator there is a "time bar" at the bottom of the screen that lets you know when the code will change again. I watch the bar as it moves from left to right and just before it changes the code I type in the last few digits of the authenticator code and then hit enter. In my best estimation this gives the "man in the middle" attack less of a window to hack into my account. What methods do you use to protect your account?

Be smart out there! Your toons are counting on you!

- Alan

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
